How to Avoid Impulse Spending

When you get catalogues in the mail, you don't have to look through them. Put them in the recycle bin or turn them into kitty litter immediately. Better still, put a "no junk mail" sticker on your letterbox and remove the temptation altogether. If you need to see if something is on special, look up the relevant website.

When you get those emails from retailers letting you in on the latest sales just delete them. Unless you need something and have been waiting for it to go on sale, don't even open the email. You can't miss what you don't know about right?

Avoiding temptation is a key in avoiding impulse purchases. Remove your name from mailing lists and you will save yourself time, stress and money. Every few months I go through my emails one by one and unsubscribe to anything I can. It frees up so much of my time each day, AND I avoid those emails advertising the latest, greatest deal I shouldn't miss

  1. OTOH, junk mail is a terrific way to save money. I don't shop at Woolworths, I get things and I get out of there, but if there's a special I can take advantage of, why the hell not? Anything I'm not interested in doesn't even come in the house, it goes straight in the recycle bin.

Yes, I'm a little biased, I actually deliver junk mail, but it's funny you know, sometimes I don't even look at them now!

And my advice to people who well and truly hate it, no I don't get paid to remember that you don't want it, so do your tiny little bit for the environment and tell the world by putting a sign up!!!

  2. I handwrote "No Junk mail" on my dodgy old letterbox about a month ago and I don't miss it in the least. My mum is horrified at the thought of living without catalogues, but I told her so long as she tells me when toilet paper is on sale, I don't care!

  3. I love my catalogues. A cup of tea and a biscuit and I shop without leaving home. Better because I really have to need something to actually go to the shops.
